Yangon Architecture and walking tour

Due to the isolation Burma has had from the rest of the world many of it’s colonial buildings have remained untouched.  As this has usually been due to lack of funds to do anything else many are in a bad state of repair.  The influx of tourist, aid and investment money into Myanmar has meant much of this history is now at risk of demolition or unsympathetic restoration.

While in the city a very good way to get a feel for this is to do a walking tour around the main buildings.  There is plenty of information out there but two ready made walking tours of Yangon architecture are:

  1. http://www.gpsmycity.com/tours/eastern-rangoon-walking-tour-5782.html
  2. http://www.myanmar2day.com/places-to-visit-in-myanmar/2009/01/yangon-travel-guide-colonial-buildings/ this one has a very good summary of the situation and descriptions of the buildings, but some of the original photos are no longer showing.

While walking be conscious of the state of the footpaths – this is four wheel drive walking, not groomed city streets!
